Another Second Life Meme, My SL Pet Peeves

“I don’t have pet peeves – I have major psychotic fucking hatreds” ~ G. Carlin

Joining in another Second Life meme from Strawberry Singh, My SL Pet Peeves Meme. See also previous post, my Seven SL Facts.

Meme instructions: Share your top five SL pet peeves. Don’t forget to link your post in the comments so I can come read!

My top five pet peeves in Second Life? Ha! Love the idea, wining, complaining, venting and ranting, great fun! ;) No problem, I do this one quickly I thought, until I discovered my more then 5000 hangups and that picking only 5 will be a challenge … so instead, I simply wrote down the first five that came to mind.

1. Random friendship requests

Random friendship requests from total strangers.I am very asocial and strongly doubt that you want to develope a “friendship” with me minding I will hardly ever IM you for a meaningless chit chat. Friendship develops from contact, not just because you send a request for it. Apart from that, WHY do you want to friend me when we are strangers to each others anyhow? What is in it for you? If you want to see when I am online, my profile shows you or use a gadget to keep track of my status if you are so inclined.

2. Empty IM

Messages with only a hi, hello, are you there … Again, why? Why does it matter if I am there or not, online or offline? Your message will reach me and I will respond when I can, online or offline, it doesn’t matter. If I’m offline the message goes to my email. Even better, if you state what you want, I can also respond faster since I know what the issue is.

3. Shout out greetings on clubs and events

Host/hostess shouting a greeting phrase as soon as you arrive after a teleport to an event or club. I know, your gadget either told you I arrived or it sends messages in your name. Either way, it is a clear sign of laziness and carelessness of both the club owner and the staff. When I started in Second Life I worked for quite a long time as hostess in several clubs and the ones sucessfull were only those forbidding us to use these gadgets and taught us how to stay alert, use your normal senses, minimap etc and great only when say within chat range. Yes it is a bit of work when the club is busy and you can’t sit and paint your fingernails at the same time … but this is what you are paid for, isn’t it? You will also see your tip amount increase … promise ;)

4. People not reading profiles

Really, if you haven’t done it before, I highly recommend it. Be brave, give it a try. You may even find quite a bit of useful information there. Like store policies or ways to best get in touch with me for fast reply … just a suggestion ;)

5. Calling me hun, dear, darling …

Stop it! To me, that is rude and insulting. Who gave you the right to call me these silly names? I have a name, use it!
I thought of this a bit and perhaps it is a culture difference? I’m swedish, we don’t use terms like that to strangers, it would be seen as a very derogation behaviour. But even so, my RL husband is Australian and I am sure he would never use these terms either, unless made with a very sarcastic tone of voice.
I have in my RL work been travelling quite a bit to the area of the Southeastern United States and noticed a frequent use of these terms here, perhaps it is the culture in the South?

My Seven SL Facts Meme

The “Seven SL Facts Meme” was originally started by the talented Strawberry Singh on her wonderfully entertaining and informative blog. I guess the secret of my stalking admiration is not so secret anymore? ;) Please visit it and contribute with yours, it has been very fun to read all others contributions, looking forward to more!

My SL Fact #1:
I just recently learned that Windlight is another term for Advanced sky settings. Thank you Strawberry Singh.

My SL Fact #2:
My first creation I tried to sell was a hat. A tophat. I discovered how to texture it, ended up with an unmentionable amount of exactly same hats, but with different textures.

My SL Fact #3:
I have tried to bribe my daughter to join Second Life. Several times.

My SL Fact #4:
I’m very antisocial. I spend most of my time in Second Life alone, building in my workshop, high up in the sky. I never IM any of the few friends I have, unless they IM me first.

My SL Fact #5:
I met my RL husband through in SL through my alts account. He in Australia, me in Sweden. Against all odds, we are now a RL couple.

My SL Fact #6:
Fashionistas scares me. Other talented bloggers scares me. Basically … everything scares me if I am being honest. I always doubt things I do, create or say is good enough and don’t understand why the few friends I have still keep me on their friends list.

My SL Fact #7:
I hate pose balls and floating text from prims … with passion.

Lumiya Viewer for Second Life

Lumiya Viewer is a Second Life viewer that runs on your phone (Android phones and tablets), support mesh and is RLV compatible. Lumiya Viewer is also officially listed in the Third Party Viewer Directory for alternative viewers. Christmas for Second Life addicts, as you can access it basically where ever you go.

StampThe creators of Lumiya recently did an update to version 2.4.2 which included some bug fixes for mesh items, such as incorrect rendering for rigged mesh items plus reduced memory usage for mesh items. In the update a new feature of avatar direction indicator on the minimap has been included. If you do not already have it and would like to download it for your phone, you will find the application with more information and usage requirements on Google Play.

I already have Lumiya Viewer installed on my phone but have not used it that much yet. I can see how it has greatly improved since last time I tried it though. The main features I am interested in and the reason I installed in in the first place, is the possibility to handle actions related to my business in Second Life. For example to be able to quickly reply to customers questions through IM or note card, send items etc. I have not yet tried to navigate around the grid with it but from the home position I can see it loads the environment including rigged mesh apparel very well. Other features are for example interact with objects in your surroundings, HUDs you might be wearing, change outfit, manage inventory, message groups, accept given items, send friend requests etc.

It is the best of the few mobile applications for Second Life I seen so far and the creator has done a good job including so much functionality in such a small application. Every update has included some new features and improved its performance.

Have you tried Lumiya Viewer yourself, what is your experiences and thoughts?
